El formato del libro es sistemático aunque mantiene el detalle necesario para un conocimiento exhaustivo de las pruebas. Presenta casi 400 entradas que revisan más de 850 pruebas diagnósticas de interés en la clínica. Cada prueba se explica en una entrada distinta, siguiendo un orden alfabético , lo que permite localizarla con rapidez. La estructura de la información en cada prueba es: nombre, tipo, resultados normales para cada grupo de edad, valores críticos, explicación y fisiología relacionada, contraindicaciones, complicaciones, factores que pueden modificar los resultados, procedimiento y cuidado del paciente, antes, después y durante la prueba.
